Early Skin Cancer Detection
Understanding Melanoma, Non-Melanoma, and the ABCDE Rule
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, but early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes. At The MOLE Clinic, we specialize in identifying the early signs of skin cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma types. Understanding the warning signs and self-check methods can help you take proactive steps in protecting your skin health.
Types of Skin Cancer
Melanoma
Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, originating in the pigment-producing cells (melanocytes). It can develop anywhere on the body and spreads more aggressively than other skin cancers if not detected early. Key risk factors include excessive UV exposure, a history of sunburns, and genetic predisposition.
Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC)
Non-melanoma skin cancers include:
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, typically appearing as a pearly or waxy bump. It grows slowly and rarely spreads but can cause significant local damage if untreated.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often appearing as a scaly, red patch or sore that doesn’t heal, SCC can be more aggressive than BCC and has the potential to spread.
Early Detection: The ABCDE Rule
One of the most effective self-assessment tools for detecting melanoma is the ABCDE rule:
A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole or lesion does not match the other half.
B – Border: Edges are irregular, blurred, or poorly defined.
C – Colour: Uneven shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.
D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), although melanomas can be smaller.
E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, or colour over time, or new symptoms like itching or bleeding.
If you notice any of these signs, seek medical advice promptly.
The Ugly Duckling Sign
Another useful method in detecting melanoma is the Ugly Duckling sign. This principle suggests that most moles on an individual’s body look similar. However, if one stands out as different in size, shape, or colour, it should be examined further.
Why Regular Skin Checks Matter
Early detection is critical in successfully treating skin cancer. Regular self-examinations and professional skin assessments can help identify suspicious changes before they become serious.
At The MOLE Clinic, our expert clinicians use advanced dermoscopic technology to examine skin lesions in detail, ensuring accurate and early detection.
