What is Melanoma?

When the DNA within melanocytes becomes damaged, usually due to overexposure to UV light, the cells can begin to multiply uncontrollably, forming a cancerous lesion.
How Melanoma Progresses in the Skin
The development of melanoma typically follows a distinct biological progression:
- Origin in the Epidermis: Melanoma begins in the melanocytes situated in the top layer of the skin.
- Cellular DNA Damage: Exposure to UV radiation causes mutated cells to reproduce abnormally.
- Early Stage (In Situ): In its earliest form, the cancer cells remain confined safely within the top layer of skin without invading deeper tissues.
- Advanced Stage: If left untreated, the lesion grows downwards into the deeper dermal layer, where access to blood vessels and lymph channels increases the risk of spreading.
While melanoma frequently begins as a new, changing, or unusual mole, it can also develop on areas of normal skin that previously had no marks at all.
Where Does Melanoma Occur?
Melanoma can appear anywhere on the body, including areas that rarely receive direct sunlight. However, clinical patterns show that it develops most frequently in specific regions depending on biological sex:
- In Women: Most commonly found on the lower legs, arms, and torso.
- In Men: Most frequently develops on the back, chest, and shoulders.
Less Common Subtypes of Melanoma
While most melanomas develop on sun-exposed skin, rare forms can occur in less obvious anatomical locations:
- Acral Lentiginous Melanoma: Develops on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, or beneath the nails. It is unrelated to UV exposure and is the most common form of melanoma diagnosed in individuals with darker skin tones.
- Lentigo Maligna Melanoma: Typically appears on sun-damaged skin in older adults, most commonly on the face, neck, and scalp, developing slowly over many years.
- Nodular Melanoma: A faster-growing form that presents as a raised, firm lump on the skin, often red, pink, or dark brown, requiring urgent evaluation.
Understanding Melanoma Stages
The outlook for melanoma depends heavily on how deeply the tumour has penetrated into the skin layers at the time of removal. Clinicians measure this depth using a microscopic scale known as the Breslow thickness.

How Melanoma is Diagnosed
If a suspicious lesion is identified during a clinical check, a structured diagnostic process is followed to ensure complete accuracy:
